I owe this book my sanity!

If your child is afraid to poop because it hurts, BUY THIS BOOK!

TMI: My 3 year old has had poop problems for quite some time now. Since she started solids she's been constipated a lot, but I didn't really know how to help. We got the girl potty trained at about 2, but soon after the constipation hit and she started holding it in. She'd actually end up screaming five times a day, because she had to go but was holding it in, and eventually she'd end up going in her pants. It was a battle to even wipe since she'd tare every time.

This book was a complete game changer. I've never seen a child so excited. When I got to the part about taking control of your body, she screamed YES! before I could read the line where the boy says yes. She was just so incredibly excitedThe next time we ate she was starting a dialogue about hard and soft poop foods. After a few days she was pooping in the toilet again and she now goes 2-3 times a day! Two weeks later she was eating an apple in the car and told me it was a hard poop food. I never thought my 3 year old would be able to regulate her own diet, but she does a wonderful job making sure she is eating less hard poop foods and lots of soft poop foods.

If I had the money I'd honestly buy this for every room at the doctors office.

I'm totally impressed with this book. I bought this book after about 2 months of fighting my newly potty trained 2 1/2 year old to poop on the potty rather than in her undies. Don't get me wrong, she'd try but she was too scared to actually go- every poop was rare, and a fight that would end in tears and pooped undies. I got this book in a little bit of desperation, we read it twice to my poor constipated preschooler, and now she "reads" it to herself at least once a day. Since reading this book I've gotten her to go potty at her grandma's house, and all I have to do is say "will you please try and go poop for me?" AND SHE GOES!!!! I'm still in awe. She's so proud of herself, and of course since shes less constipated its much less scary and the cycle continues for good. I'm a happy mom with no poopy undies for almost two weeks now. She's a happy kiddo with a less grumpy belly. High Praise all around.

making himself feel worse, and he wouldn't listen to us

If your toddler is afraid to poop in the potty, you need to buy this NOW. This book, in addition to some stool softener (as directed by a pediatrician) is what ended our year long battle to get our son to poop. He was always scared, and would know when he had to go, but he was keeping it in, making himself feel worse, and he wouldn't listen to us.

The book explains exactly that, first in story form, then from the doctor character in the book. It is written by a doctor, and puts the same discussion that a doctor would have with your child, in an easily repeatable lesson.

Two weeks after this book arrived, my son started pooping on the toilet regularly and stating that he won't have accidents because "I'm the boss of my own body"

I will hands down tell all of my friends with toddlers about this book.

Excellent small group study material!

Very well written in easy English - no post-doctorate theologian. My small group enjoyed this study very much and because of McArthur's easy writing style, I am sure we will look at more of his study guides. The accompanying workbook is also very much in depth, but was a huge aid to understanding the study.

Recommend for pastors or theologians... not for those early in their Christian pursuits

Perhaps I'm just not ready for this book. I am greatly preferential to books that "directly give guidance" on how to better live a Christian life. This book does not do this; rather you could infer inspiration by the ordinary who did lead extraordinary lives as Christians... or at least deepen your knowledge of the apostles. The book was also a little slow and redundant. Things that could be stated in 1 paragraph were shared in a page... It was not an easy book to "get into".

I recommend this book for only for people who are extremely mature in their spiritual journey... such as pastors or theologians.

The publication of Richard Plant's The Pink Triangle: The Nazi War Against Homosexuals (1986) opened public discussion of the treatment of gay people under the Third Reich. Since then, few books have revealed the personal stories of those who endured anti-gay German policies (I, Pierre Seel, Deported Homosexual, 1995, is a notable exception), perhaps because many of the gay men who survived are now dead, or never felt safe coming out even after the war. All of this makes Beck's startling memoir a particularly important addition to both gay and Holocaust studies. Born in 1923 to a Jewish father and a Christian mother in a middle-class family, Beck was raised in both of his parents' religious traditions. When anti-Jewish policiesAinvolving housing relocation, forced labor and, finally, transport to the campsAbegan to be enforced, Beck helped set up resistance efforts to hide refugees and smuggle food and drugs into labor and concentration camps. Beck, director of Berlin's Jewish Adult Education Center, recalls his youth and his work in the anti-Nazi resistance under most unusual circumstances. Beck was half of a pair of twins (with his sister Margot) born to an interfaith couple in Weimar Germany. Beck was one of those rare fortunate gay men who recognized his sexual orientation while still very young and who had a tolerant, loving, and supportive family who never for an instant were troubled by his lifestyle. He was equally lucky that his kin on the Christian side of the family felt the same toward their new Jewish relatives. Those facts are an inextricable element in his story of growing up Jewish in Nazi Germany. When Hitler came to power in 1933, Beck and his family found themselves, like other Jews, almost immediately stigmatized by law and separated forcibly from their non-Jewish friends and neighbors. After a lengthy series of humiliations, he was forced to leave his nondenominational school for a Jewish one. Beck is one of those quietly feisty types who are spurred by rejection into action; plunged into an entirely Jewish milieu, he quickly embraced the Zionist movement. Just as quickly, he embraced many of its male adherents, and the author is charmingly frank (but not explicit) about his sex life as well as his clandestine political activities. He would survive the war living as an ``illegal'' in Berlin, becoming a central figure in the underdocumented Zionist resistance that functioned despite the Nazis. Beck is a witty, chatty figure, and Heibert and Brown have done a splendid job of capturing and conveying his voice. The result is a readable and entertaining memoir of a terrible time. Powerful Book about a Gay Jew in Berlin, but So Much More Than That

An Underground Life: Memoirs of a Gay Jew in Nazi Berllin is a relatively quick read, but there are so many names that sometimes it's hard to keep track of who is who, the only drawback I saw in the memoir (a glossary of names would have been helpful). The memoir starts with the period before the war and deals with the rise of the Nazis, followed by the the massive deportations of Jews to the camps. However, there were still quite a few Jews living in Berlin (about 6000-8000 of the 160,000 who resided there in 1933) through the course of the war. Many were in hiding, some were "passing" and had fake credentials, and many others were "mischlings," such as Beck himself (half Jew/half Aryan), who officially could be deported to the camps but who often did slave labor in Berlin as part of the Nazi war effort instead (as Beck did, although his luck finally ran out and he ended up in a pre-deportation center because of his involvement in the Jewish Resistance movement, but it was right at the time that the war was ending, so he didn't get deported after all (by the skin of his teeth). These remaining Jews in Berlin were often helped by cAryans (Aryans who "cared" for them either because they were making money off of them or because they were really good Christian people). It was amazing how many sexual encounters Gad had with younger gay and straight Jews alike. The straight Jews often thought their days were numbered and wanted intimacy, even it was with their own sex, before being sent off to the camps. These sexual encounters were often quite passionate and not of the "wham bam" variety, involving a great deal of all-night cuddling while the men slept together in a mutual hiding place. These encounters were usually of the "finding a port in the storm" variety. In some cases, these relationships actually lasted for several months. Beck is not a physical wonder by any means; he's just a good, positive, shrewd, and incredibly brave person who never let fear keep him from doing what was needed to help his Jewish brothers and sisters. I think he is a real hero, not just for gay people but for all Jews as well. His daily encounters with death and tragedy, from which he often barely escaped, kept me turning those pages.

The memoir ends with the end of the war.In 1947, Beck went Israel and settled down with a partner he meets there, while continuing to be involved in Jewish emigration to Israel. He returned to Berlin in the 1970s and died in Berlin in 2012 at the age of 88.

Should have been more interesting

I was disappointed that this story wasn't better told. Some of the reviews, I think, conflate Mr. Beck's obvious and commendable daring and intelligence with good writing. The book is told in an obvious 'this happened, then this happened, then this happened' format with no attempt to be more creative or artful in the narrating. Little is provided in the way of context or explanation. Given the fact that "Memoirs of a Gay Jew" is the subtitle, there is precious little information about wartime gay life and, in fact, the random "...and then I slept with a beautiful man I saw across the courtyard" comes across as gratuitous and irrelevant. Further, Mr. Beck packs in an unnecessary, endless string of names that makes keeping track of all the players virtually impossible. And frankly, there is almost nothing actually explaining the details of life as an illegal under the Nazis. Not to detract from Mr. Beck's importance in helping many Jews survive in Hitler's Berlin, but I was hoping for much more from this book. A more active professional co-author, or a good editor, could have benefited this work greatly, because it could be a really compelling work.

Fantastic Read

This is one of the few books from college that I kept. I read it for a class titled The History of Sex in Modern Europe. In this book, I cried, I laughed, and yelled out loud at the antagonists. It's definitely worth the read and provides a totally different insight to the Holocaust.

Aunque el protagonista es un asesino bajo contrato y sus misiones estan planificadas cuidadosamente, un minuto de indecision lo lleva a protagonizar una carrera contra el tiempo para detectar quien o quienes quieren matarlo. Se descubre ademas cierta sensibilidad y ternura en el protagonista. El final es algo confuso para mi gusto pero me entretuvo y lo lei en tiempo record. Lo recomiendo.

During the bloodshed of 1947, India's forces drove Pakistan from Kashmir, a Muslim majority region that, theoretically, belonged to Muslim Pakistan. Obsession over Kashmir's loss persists, creating a virtual permanent war with India; civil government remains subservient to the military, which absorbs most of Pakistan's revenue, leaving little for economic development. Pakistani leaders quickly requested U.S aid, trumpeting their anticommunism. America responded modestly but generously after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, and massively after 9/11. HUSAIN HAQQANI was Pakistan s ambassador to the United States from 2008 to 2011. A trusted advisor of late Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto, Ambassador Haqqani is a professor at Boston University and Senior Fellow and Director for South and Central Asia at the Hudson Institute. A sorry tale but true

Haqqani, former Pakistani Ambassador to the United States and currently persona non grata (extremely non grata) from his homeland, denounced as a traitor and accused of betraying the Pakistani military in favor of the United States, has no illusions about who runs his native land and who benefits from it. While "Magnificent Delusions" may seem over the top in places the more one reads about and studies South Asia the more one realizes that his book is very much on the money.

Haqqani writes that Pakistan has had an inflated view of its importance on the world stage since 1947 and expects the United States to fund and arm it. At the same time U.S. intelligence and political leaders refused to see that the Pakistani military was created, trained and deployed for war with India particularly to force the return of Kashmir to Pakistan. They continued to tell themselves that Pakistan was part of a bulwark against the USSR. In reality the Pakistani enemies list started and stopped with India although there were always belligerent noises toward Israel. The pro forma pronouncements against the Soviets in Afghanistan were mainly to keep the flow of funds moving from Washington. In recent years, their erstwhile proxies (Pakistan Taliban, al Qaeda, etc.) have turned their guns on the Pakistani state itself.

While the sorry tale of the huge increase in U.S. military aid to Pakistan after soviet invasion of Afghanistan doesn't need retelling, one unintended consequence was increasing funds for the development of an "Islamic bomb" in Pakistan. The Saudis contributed billions to fight the Taliban and al Qaeda operations while the United States matched much of it. There was so much money sloshing around with essentially no oversight or control from the donors it was easy to surreptitiously transfer hundreds of millions of dollars to the nuclear program.

Dr. Haqqani's current effort.

I usually do not write reviews of the books but I think this book made me concerned enough to write one. Dr. Haqqani has written a “well researched” book that actually is quite a venomous opinion piece about Pakistan. The research that he did for this book, was basically to build up a case, about, how successive governments in Pakistan lied and cheated the world specially United States for their own purposes. This is like a 7 years old brat who is asking for guns from his parents and grandparents and all of them are naive and nice enough to give in to his demands. According to Dr. Haqqani’s argument, the kid is on fault as he should have known better.
By writing this book, Dr. Haqqani is trying to make a moral argument about the immorality of Pakistan. It is a difficult mantle to carry on by someone who started his political career as the president of student wing of Jamait-e-Islami (Muslim hardliners with extremist wings in Afghanistan and Kashmir). Later he saw the “light” and became the supporter of Zia-ul-Haq (Army dictator) and later his protégé Nawaz Sharif. During Nawaz’s first term, Dr. Haqqani became the ambassador to Sri Lanka. When Nawaz’s government was toppled and Benazir Bhutto came into power, Dr. Haqqani again saw the “light” and efficiently switched boats to join her government. Later he was ambassador to US until Supreme Court of Pakistan charged him with treason, because of a memo that he wrote to Admiral Mike Mullan to intervene in Pakistan while offering him numerous rewards from Govt. of Pakistan. It is quite ironic that he did the same thing for which he is criticizing his country in the current book. After reading the book, I was just surprised that how someone with such a hatred towards their parent country can represent her in this difficult world. Pakistan Supreme Court answered that question slightly by saying in their judicial report that “Hussain Haqqani was not loyal to Pakistan”.
There may be other books that can give you a more neutral picture of Pakistan. On the other hand if you want to get a hateful opinion from one of the “insiders’ then this book is for you. Looking at Mr. Haqqani’s life as an opportunistic individual, my guess is that, as he cannot go back to Pakistan because of pending legal charges, Dr. Haqqani has seen the “light” again (probably 5th time in his life) and is trying to pant himself as an antiestablishment and anti-Pakistan person to get some invitations from news channels (FOX etc) as an “expert”.

Important case study in international relations

A fundamental requirement of effective foreign policy is cultural competency: The ability to communicate in a way that meaning is not distorted when messages are translated across worldviews and political contexts. When communications are not assessed within the contexts from which they emerge, confusion can result. When one or both sides hears what they want to hear, however, it is not confusion, but delusion that results. As an advisor to two Prime Ministers and Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States from 2008 to 2011, Husain Haqqani saw first hand the dysfunction that can seep into international relations when one or both sides bases their foreign policy in delusion.

Husain Haqqani's first-hand experience in US-Pakistan relations notwithstanding, "Magnificent Delusions" is not a memoir, but a case study. Haqqani begins his examination of US-Pakistan relations before Pakistan's independence in 1947, and details a history of both sides hearing what they wanted to hear while ignoring the global and domestic political contexts in which events were unfolding.

Neither is the book a polemic against the US or Pakistan. From Secretary of State Dulles overlooking the eerily prescient observations of Ambassador Langley in the late 1950s to Pakistan's misunderstanding of the limits of US obligations in bilateral security agreements, Haqqani details a history in which both countries have developed foreign policy around a set of wishful assumptions rather than contextual analysis.

"Magnificent Delusions" serves as a point of reorientation for US-Pakistan relations, but it also provides an important case study to guide the development of other relationships as well.
