Purchased this as a textbook, (S/O to Howard Leathers if he ever reads this) it not only is an interesting textbook, it also contains a lot of valuable information for anyone casually interested in the subject, written in a fashion that will catch your attention.

I am writing this review as a Mechanical Engineering student at Iowa State University, who used The World Food Problem: Toward Ending Undernutrition in the Third World as the text for an elective three credit class on world food issues. I used the book for daily assigned readings, as well as to answer questions on the exam study guides. College students taking an elective class that uses The World Food Problem: Toward Ending Undernutrition in the Third World as the main text book will find this review useful. The criteria that I used to evaluate this product were the usefulness of the text for my class, the condition of the book, and the delivery promptness.

Usefulness
This book was very useful in the sense that it applied directly to my class and I was able to perform well on exams based on information found in the text, despite the fact that the class was not within my major. It was unbiased and very well written, and covered all the points of hunger issues facing the world today. Everything from economics of the issues to the moral concerns were addressed, and both the negative and positive views that currently exist in society were explained. The authors did not take one side or the other, but simply explained what arguments exist, and had the data and references to back up the claims. On the other hand, the book was outdated and used a lot of data from 2008 for economic comparisons as well as to describe what was currently happening in the area of world food problems today.

Book Condition
My expectations for the condition of the book were that it would contain no highlighting or writing, and the cover would be in very good condition with no creases. This book had no markings and all of the pages were intact, but the cover had some slight wear at the corners from the delivery process.

Delivery
For the delivery of this product, I was expecting the textbook to be delivered to my house at the address that I specified during the ordering process and within the estimated delivery date provided by Amazon.com, so I would have it before the start of my class. The delivery met all of my expectations.

great book; but beware errors

Good selection of words and learning aids are very good, but... there are a number of errors. For example "edification" is a noun, but is defined as "enlighten" which is a verb. "Gambit" is defined as a verb; it is a noun. "Malcontent" is defined as a adjective; it is a noun. These examples are from only the first 20% of the book; there are lots more. If you know these words already, you might not notice these things, but if you are trying to learn them... so beware. It is actually a good exercise to try to catch these inconsistencies because SAT/ACT exams also test usage, not just meaning. On another note, it would be nice if the book more consistently listed and explicitly distinguished between primary and secondary meanings, since those tests often try to trick students with secondaries. Again, a good book that just needs a more thorough edit.

For FAST, EFFECTIVE memorization!

This book is great! I am halfway through the 290 words and I remember all the ones i learned! the mnemonic devices utilize one way the brain learns: visual association. this book is not kidding when it claims that you will learn "a word a minute and youll never forget it". The visual mnemonics are hilarious and silly, often ridiculous, which is great because our brains tend to remember anomalies, and pictures are worth a thousand words remember? The pictures are very well done too. Here's one of my favorite examples:

HUSBANDRY
(HUZ bun dree)n.
management of resources, esp. in agriculture

Link: HUSBAND TREE

*picture inserted of a woman standing proudly holding a pitchfork next to a tree. Male farmers are shown hanging by their trousers on the branches*

"To help in her HUSBANDRY chores, Aunt Emma had her own HUSBAND TREE."

(Examples Sentences)

Bud's superb HUSBANDRY of his orange grove resulted in a larger than expected crop this year.

(HUSBANDRY is the practive of conserving resources; to HUSBAND is to economize) Experts say the world's oil resources will soon be exhausted, and we must soon begin to HUSBAND oil.

Everyone in our squad HUSBANDED their share of water for the long trek back to the barracks.

This mnemonic method helps you not only learn, but retain hundreds of words. So the next time you encounter the word husbandry, you will automatically think "husband tree" and then the picture of a bunch of men hanging from a tree will come into your mind, and then you will remember the funny sentence, and finally, the definition. btw, this will all happen in an instant. The three example sentences will help you learn the words in context, and there is a review after every 10 words to assess what you learned. This book will be extremely helpful for the SAT!

However, there are reasons why I didn't give this a 5 out of 5 rating. For one thing, there are only 290 words in this book. yes, there is another volume, but in total there's only 580 words, and you need to know more for the SAT. i recommend getting a vocabulary book like Princeton Review's Word Smart or Norman Lewis's Word Power Made Easy as a supplement. yes, they are not quite as fun as VC, but they do have a lot more words.

Two, sometimes the link word and picture have NOTHING to do with the definition of the word, to the point where the mnemonic can't help you memorize the word. For example, what does a man being stuck in an AIRTIGHT jar have to do with being ERUDITE?

Three, the words in this book are particularly easy. I knew a lot of the words in the book before reading it. for example, ajar, aftermath, abhor, allure, alternative, antecedent, appalling, artisan, aspire, astute, asunder, assuage, bizzare, bleak, certify, chide, comprise, cower, cranny, creditor, criterion, damper,deft, dillema, disperse, docile, dormant,embellish, emit, embody, endure, enrage, entice, emulate, evoke, feign, generalize, giddy, gloat, and more and I'm only halfway through! But then again, my vocabulary isn't that bad, so it depends, are you a vocabulary Einstein? If you are, say a junior/senior in high school and very diligent in memorizing list after list of words, then this book will not be a doozy. But if you are a lazy person lacking of vocabulary and don't feel like memorizing mundane lists but need a quick and easy method to memorize words, then this book is perfect! however, it doesn't hurt to reinforce what you know right?

The gripes I have do not take away from the quality of this excellent book and the effectiveness of the methods. I can't wait to read the second volume as well! Definitely buy this book NOW, you will not regret it!

Great concept, but shabby execution.

Revised and Updated Edition!

Unlike the second volume, the cartoons in the first volume are well drawn.

I have several gripes with this book. It barely achieves its purpose. Before giving it to someone who greatly appreciated it, I went through the book and made corrections, so that the learner would not learn incorrect English. One would expect the pronunciations to be consistent and correct. The example sentences sound like a 7th grader's first attempt to use the word in a sentence. The definitions seem to use more SAT words to clarify the meaning of the word.

I would think they would correct all the mistakes when they update the book.

Following are some embarrassing mistakes:

Comprise: The word "comprise" is never followed by the word "of." The authors knew this rule, but still made the mistake of writing, "was comprised of..." and later forgetting to erase the "was."

"It was not a pleasant surprise when the pirates discovered their treasure was comprised only party favors."
"The first aid kit was comprised a bottle of aspirin, two gauze pads, and a pair of scissors."

Fathom: (fa THUM) Have you ever heard this word pronounced with emphasis on the last syllable? I checked all my dictionaries and of course the word is (FATH um).

Vol. 2:

Terse: (terce) That is the helpful guide to pronunciation. First of all, who would use the letter "c" in guiding pronunciation? An "s" or a "k" will suffice. Secondly, even if the authors chose to use "c" to mean "s," the adjacent page has tenacious pronounced (teh NAY shus); the last "s" makes the appropriate sound. Be consistent!

Obtrude: (aub TROOD)

Obese: (oh BEECE) Again...the letter "c" is the least helpful letter for pronunciation, when "s" would work.

Malcontent: Some of you may think I am being overly strict with regard to proper English, but the reason I am being strict is because this is an educational book pretending to teach English. The example sentence reads, "We seem to always have one malcontent who can negatively impact team spirit." The word "impact," does not mean "affect" or "influence." To "have an impact on" is the way to write it. If you use "impact" as a verb, and some would only use it as a noun, then it means "slam into, collide, crush."

Bequest: link: GO WEST. Mnemonic device sentence: "Joe's last bequest was to go west." How on earth this mnemonic sentence has anything to do with the meaning of the word. If anything, it would only confuse the student.

One more annoyance with the book is this: readers get frustrated when two words, which have the same definition (beset, beleaguer), are in the same chapter, and in the same "matching" quiz. So they arbitrarily pick one or the other, or throw the book down.

(If anyone points out a misspelling or grammatical error in this review, I'm fine with that. After all, I am not publishing and selling a book to teach students English.)

About the Author
David N. Hyman, professor of economics and alumni distinguished undergraduate professor at North Carolina State University, has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in public finance there since 1969. Professor Hyman received his Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University. He has held Woodrow Wilson, Earhart, and Ford Foundation fellowships and was a Fullbright senior research scholar in Italy in 1980. In 1997, he was visiting professor of economics at the University of Ferrara in Italy. Professor Hyman is a member of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers at North Carolina State University and received the Alumni Association Outstanding Teacher Award in 1982 and 1996. He is the author of several widely used textbooks in economics and has published scholarly articles in the NATIONAL TAX JOURNAL, PUBLIC CHOICE, the JOURNAL OF ECONOMICS EDUCATION, and other respected academic journals. Professor Hyman served the President's Council of Economic Advisors as a consultant and senior staff economist from 1988 to 1989. He also has been a guest scholar at the Brookings Institution and has worked as a government budget analyst and as an economist for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and the U.S. Comptroller of the Currency. Professor Hyman also is a photographer whose palladium and platinum prints are in the permanent collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. His photographs have been exhibited by galleries and museums and have been published in art books and on the covers of several novels.

One of the most painful textbooks available

One of the most painful textbooks available! I have read several and most current books are much easier to read and don't lose you in the overly talkative Mumbai jumbo like this one. Many times the author just enjoys using ridiculous words to beat around the bush before summarizing and keeping the reader interested. I get that its a textbook an a very dry subject, but this was just painful to read.

About the Author
Cornelis ( Kase ) Klein is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in geology from McGill University, Canada, and his Ph.D. from Harvard University, also in geology. He has been a member of the geology faculty at Harvard University; Indiana University, Bloomington; and the University of New Mexico; he has taught courses in mineralogy at all these universities. His published books include Manual of Mineralogy (19th 21st eds.); Manual of Mineral Science (22nd 23rd eds.); and Minerals and Rocks: Exercises in Crystal and Mineral Chemistry, Crystallography, X-Ray Powder Diffraction, Mineral and Rock Identifi cation, and Ore Mineralogy (3rd ed., 2008). He has received two awards for excellence in teaching from the University of New Mexico.

Manual of Mineral Science (23rd ed.) Top in Field!

This new edition has made several improvements over the last one. The organization is clearer and better prepared. This book provides a better explanation and more detailed examples than other books of this type. The CD is a great asset for readers in comprehending the heirarchy of crystal organization and provides better visualization of the three-dimensional aspects of the various crystal forms and structures.

Not for the light of heart.

This is a great book for those who want a very in depth and comprehensive understanding of mineralogy. However, with no prior knowledge in chemistry or geology this book is very hard to understand. It is also very hard to read. It does not flow and is very analytical. It does have so very useful things though. It has a description and breakdown of most minerals and a great mineral index. If your serious and have prior background, get it.

Great book, *after* an introduction to the topic...

Into the 5th week of Mineralogy class, this book *then* became extremely informative - this is not a self-instructional manual, and I do not believe it was intended to be so. Most students will find the writing style in this text a bit intellectually heady, having been written by a distinguished Harvard PhD professor. It could have been written more concisely, perhaps more simplisticly, but all the information is there, and from what I understand, past editions were more comprehensive than this 22nd edition. I personally love this text, and only *after* an introduction to the subject will this text make real sense to the reader. And yes, I agree with the previous posts regarding certain statements about crystal structures that require some sort of base level knowledge of chemistry or physics or math (i.e. symmetry concepts) in order to fully comprehend a particular passage, but that's what you get from an Ivy League PhD-er! I believe this text was designed for the third year student who should already have taken 1 semester each of at least chemistry and calculus. Although calculus isn't necessary for the class, it presupposes that you know and understand some basic conceptual geometry.

I would suggest reading some basic introduction to mineralogy websites before tackling this book. Also, I have found that for the conscientious mineralogy students who possess a "more refined" reading level and who are putting genuine effort into the class, this book is a valuable edition. Other texts simply do not cover as much material as found here, such as x-ray diffraction and optics. Overall meant for students and not the self-taught, although that depends on the individual, but in general I would not recommend this for the beginner who wants to learn on his/her own. Still, a great text. Try getting some olders editions with less sub-subjects edited out for a real comprehensive text!

The best book for Survivors.

My copy of Mike Lew's book is well worn, most pages have sections underlined and notes written down the margins.

A lot of pages are stained with coffee, red wine and tears.

It's a book I still read a lot, five years after I first got it.

I am a Survivor of sexual abuse, and have recovered my life through therapy, and some hard personal work. But the personal work was so much easier with this remarkable book.

Mike Lew's understanding of 'our' problems is second to none and he expresses himself very clearly throughout the book. Don't think that this is just a book for professionals, it isn't. This is a book for everyone concerned with men who have been sexually abused.

I now work with other Survivors, and I always recommend this book to them, which is why I'm here at Amazon again; buying yet another copy so someone else can benefit.

five stars isn't enough for this

Mike Lew's book is the definitive book on recovery for males from childhood sexual abuse. When I first bought it, I was not even able to open it to the blurb page without feeling that finally, there was something that I could use to help...finally there was someone who cared. The book is hard to read. Hard, hell, it is, at times, nearly impossible, but it is also hopeful. Mike Lew is sure to include positive messages directed at the survivor, messages of encouragement and hope. I found myself with tears in my eyes as I saw my story and my life on every page, but I now know that I will survive. If you need this book, first get yourself into therapy, then get this book and take all the time you need with it. Don't rush through it.

Excellent overall, but skip the first two sections

This is a very delicate subject, and I doubt I'm the only one working on a DIY recovery for something that really should involve professional support. This is exactly the book that we need. It covers all of the common effects and many recovery strategies. Written by a psychotherapist, it carries the DNA of the academic and therapeutic communities, but is written in an accessible and jargon-free style that makes it useful for the rest of us.

Unfortunately, the preface, introduction and first section of the book are of little interest, and most of the second is a feminist critique of masculinity that would be right at home in a modern university setting but is unhelpful or even a little offensive to those of us who have already had our masculinity attacked in the most personal way possible.

There is a "media analysis" of masculine stereotypes that makes you wonder if the author has owned a TV set in the last 30 years. The Marlboro man was replaced by dimwitted sitcom dads long ago, and if anybody knocks someone out in a fight these days on TV it will be a beautiful but impossibly strong woman cold-cocking a huge but moronic man. There is the "gender is cultural" trope that is supposed to encourage us to embrace our feminine sides. Not now, thanks. Maybe not ever. And there is the chapter, "Our Debt to the Women's Movement" just in case the point was not driven home sufficiently.

My advice to anyone who is not an ardent feminist is simply to start on page 40, where most of the political correctitude is replaced with genuine insight and helpful advice. It will avoid getting a bad start.

In an environment where standardized testing dominates institutionalized learning at the grade school level, university coursework must reach out and actively pull students onto the stage of the globalized world. It must teach students of their role in global events, the way in which events abroad determine--and are determined by--choices related to purchasing food, voting, and the consumption of natural resources. Textbooks can only hope to accomplish this feat by demonstrating the relevance of current events for students who lack any framework for digesting complex discourse on global politics, regional geography, and economics. The Plaid Avenger's World uses an innovative style of presentation to show students that they are indeed actors in processes outside of their immediate viewing areas. This textbook confronts students with real-world issues in a manner that both entertains and educates, but most importantly, guides students in a direction to engage and understand contemporary media after they finish reading the book.

The first pages of The Plaid Avenger's World introduce key concepts and definitions covered in most freshman-level social science courses: trends in development, population dynamics, and the like. A fun and entertaining read. The 7th edition is it with a high school edition with a bit less saucy language. This is a great resource for geography and world history teachers looking to beef up their knowledge or as an example of how to put the content into student language.
