Reilly's Wildcard is the fourth offering in Anne Rainey's Blackwater series. This was my first read from Ms. Rainey and I really enjoyed it.

The back story as I understood it seemed very promising, and was the reason I chose the book in the first place. Turns out that I chose well because the story was every bit as good as I'd anticipated. Rainey's Blackwater series features the five Jennings brothers and the emotional baggage that came with being orphaned and placed in the foster system.

Later on they were all taken in by a great couple and given a loving home. The guys are appreciative for everything their adoptive parents did for them, so when their mother needs them, they all come running. This is romance land, so they're bound to find love along the way in this series. And as they do they'll each have some issues to face. This is Reilly's story.

Reilly and Lucy hooked up for a one night stand that ended in disaster when he says something that hurts her feelings. She runs off and refuses to let him make it up to her. Foolish girl, that's what she was. Anyhow, two months later, she finds out she's knocked up with his kid.

Here's where the story got even more interesting to me. It's Reilly who wants something more in this story. Lucy has some deep issues of her own that keep her from committing to anything permanent. Of course, it didn't help that Reilly was a bit paranoid and kept on hurting her feelings. But then, she could have pulled on her big girl panties and quit being such a cry baby herself. Reilly definitely needed a filter for what was coming out of his mouth, but he really did love Lucy. He wanted to be there for her and the baby. He did the best he could and she kept trying to push him away. I felt that they both had some problems and that they dealt with them the best way they could.

I guess you could say that I liked both of them to a certain extent. But I definitely loved Reilly, and it wasn't just because the writer describes him as sex on a stick. He was all that but he was also a good guy who wanted to do what was right for his kid. That the sizzling attraction he felt for Lucy turned into something real along the way was just icing on the cake.

I didn't like Lucy nearly as much as I did Reilly. She was much too whiny for my liking. She kept running away every time he said something that hurt her little feelings. I kept wanted to grab her by her hair and give her a piece of my mind. What is wrong with a good argument every now and then? Solving your problems by talking -- or screaming -- things out usually works wonders in a relationship. It'll add passion to the story every time. I would've enjoyed seeing her go toe-to-toe with Reilly instead of running away.

This story got a little personal for me. Lucy wasn't sure if she could be a good mom. Don't most of us feel that way our first time around? Given her history, I understood those feelings. It took her a while to realize that she'd just have to feel her way along, and that made the story even better for me. I was a young mother once and had some of those same fears myself. Lucy wasn't a young mother, but she had a whole different set of problems. But as I read this story I kept thinking that, like me, she needed to realize that she had it in her to be a really great mom. Lucy was afraid that she couldn't be enough for her child or for Reilly. She just had to believe in herself. Lucky for her, she had a great guy to help her do that.

This is an erotic story, and some of the love scenes are really spicy. The first one was the hottest, but there were plenty of hot scenes spaced throughout the story.

I really enjoyed this story. The plot flowed well and made it easy to engage in the story.The writer did a fantastic job with character development. She gave me a good understanding of why Reilly and Lucy acted the way they did. I understood their feelings. I was able to identify with Lucy, even when I didn't like her very much. It takes a talented writer to do that, especially in such a short story.

I'd recommend this story to all contemporary readers.

I really like Reilly and Lucy and there was a lot more angst in this story than the previous ones. With that said, there seemed to be a lot of misunderstanding and uncertainty that I just didn't get... It seemed like the reached a level as a couple and then would take 2 giant steps back and not be sure how the other felt and why they were really together. I understand the need to give the story some conflict, but this made the closeness I felt feel imagined. Anyway, the storyline and characters were great and I was happy to see where they ended up!

This book is good Reilly has really met his match in Lucy. Lucy is headstrong and knows how to take care of herself and has been doing this since her she divorced her husband. After one night together Lucy finds out that she is pregnant and is not sure how Reilly will react to it. It is funny to see the push and pull of to strong willed people. This is a short story so everything is a bit rushed but I would definitely recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

Martyr as Witness

Though martyrdom is not a concept unique to the Christian tradition, for Christians it does posses a unique role. This was certainly the case in the earliest years of the Church. The Christian understanding of martyrdom stood over against the Greek and Roman traditions and even, though to a much lesser extent, its parent, Judaism. Namely, martyrdom became a, if not the, central governing symbol for Christians in a way that had not been seen in other traditions.

This is not particularly surprising when we are faced with the fact of Christ’s crucifixion. Apostolic kerygma has always been forced to reckon with the bloody execution of Jesus. Indeed, for Christians who are identified by and with this Christ (bearing the title “Christianos”), death, particularly a death suffered in faithfulness to God, becomes a necessary symbol informing a Christian self-understanding.

This is expressed pointedly by Hans Urs von Balthasar when he writes that “[though] this does not mean that every single Christian must suffer bloody martyrdom, [it does mean] he must consider the entire case as the external representation of the inner reality out of which he lives” (quoted on p. 6). In other words, martyrdom is not an aberrant occurrence within a Christian history that is by and large unfamiliar with suffering witness. Rather, martyrdom is constitutive, and irreducibly so, of the Christian self.

Rightly seeing this, Michael P. Jensen coopts the notion of martyrdom as a “unique opportunity to examine and reflect on the meaning of Christian identity and its reception in the world” (7). Put otherwise, because martyrdom is the event that explicating what is already “latent in the Christian identity”, the validity of martyrdom determines the validity of the Christian way-of-being. That is perhaps to phrase it in an overly apologetic way, however, there is no doubt that Jensen’s work is an apologia for the Christian understanding of the self against its critics.

He chooses to explore the Christian identity via martyrdom through a theological reading (forgive the redundancy) of T. S. Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral. Jensen adopts the four temptations assailing Archbishop Thomas as pressure points through which to test the strength of the Christian identity.

Jensen finds in Eliot’s Tempters the fictional embodiment of real challenges that have been leveled at the Christian self in recent years. Each set of temptations leads to the discussion of a modern interlocutor who offers a different conception of the self – one that stands over against the Christian self. The critics that Jensen engages are varied, from Richard Rorty to Martha Nussbaum, though all present a real challenge to the Christian self-understanding.

Jensen navigates these conversations with impressive insight. Often times his interlocutors are shown to misunderstand and thus misrepresent the Christian self-understanding, however, elsewhere he demonstrates that there is a real conflict. However, that conflict is positioned just at the point that it ought to be – the truth of the gospel. The Christian self is foolish if the Christian message is not true. It is right here that Jensen is perhaps most helpful. He demonstrates forcefully that the Christian life, as a life lived in faithfulness unto death, is itself a statement. The narratives we embody make claims about reality. Thus, the martyr’s life functions as a bloodstained question mark against all other forms of living. If true, it renders all other lives false.

To quote John Howard Yoder, martyrdom claims, “that people who bear crosses are working with the grain of the universe.” And in this the Christian, empowered by and participating in the witness of Christ, testifies to the reconciliation of the world made known in the gospel of the crucified but risen Messiah.

Jensen has written a beautiful book. Not particularly in form, though the prose is strong, but in its substance. By directing us to look at the suffering witness of the Church though the ages we are made to gaze at the Christ who first suffered – the Christ who still suffers with His people. I would have liked to see him push the political implications of a Christian identity constituted by martyrdom a bit more relentlessly. He would have done well to approach the question of Christian involvement in a violent State. However, he did show great tact in statements such as “Martyrdom is a sign precisely of the world’s rejection of divine rule, not of the church’s rejection of worldly rule” (96). This is an important reminder for those of us who are overly ambitious to demonize the world.

A real, though ultimately minor, point of contention I hold with Jensen, however, is his notion of the Church. At one point he states that “It is not, then, the church qua church that will stand against Hades; rather, it is the declaration of Jesus’s messiahship” (91). This is a curious claim. Is not the “church qua church” precisely that which stands, in real time, as the declaration of Jesus’ messiahship? Isn’t it the Church, as the community of Christ that is His witness? This points to what may be a subtle individualism in Jensen’s account. In fact, it may be his attention to Murder in the Cathedral that occasions this, as Eliot focuses on the martyrdom of the one man, standing alone in the face of a host of enemies. Regardless, martyrdom becomes an individual affair even if Jensen grants that it is for the sake of the Church and the world. I’d be interested to hear what Jensen thinks an ecclesiology determined by a martyr’s self-understanding would look like. Such an account would have greatly benefited his work.

Nonetheless, this volume is worth reading and rereading. I certainly will go back to it again in the coming months. If not solely for the fact that it compels us to live truthful lives.

Add black and white vintage illustrations and you have a powerful yet easily accessed health history reference.

I purchased this book for a class I was taking and then I was going to turn around and sell it, but It's a great read! Not to sound too morbid, but the Information and history of how diseases have affected the course of history and how they continue to shape our world is just amazing.

A whirlwind tour of epidemics, too superficial to be useful

This survey of every epidemic and pandemic known to mankind since the dawn of written records is an epic unto itself. Starting with the Athens epidemic in 430 BC, the author takes us on a step-by-step voyage through everything from the endemic malaria of ancient Rome to modern "mad cow" disease. The chapters are divided into seven subsections: When and Where (basic facts), Significance, Background, How it Was Understood at the Time, Responses, Unresolved Historical Issues, and Suggestions for Additional Reading. Given how exciting mass exterminations of human beings are, this book should have made for some great reading.

Unfortunately, the author of this book bit off more than he could chew. Each brief chapter is a whirlwind tour of a disease shoved into a historical description that is too general to be enlightening. Moreover, because Hays is a historian rather than a medical researcher, the truly fascinating details of the diseases themselves are lacking. To make matters worse, Hays writes in a high school textbook style that is completely devoid of meaningful interpretation, theoretical framework, or even a sense of genuine interest. As a consequence, Epidemics and Pandemics literally put me to sleep. (And I thought nobody could make the Black Death seem dull.)

Most good books written about epidemics are written by epidemiologists, but, believe it or not, some of the best books on this topic are fiction. The Doomsday Book, by Connie Willis, is science fiction, but it is the best description of the Black Death I have ever read. If you want to really understand the impact of an epidemic, read historical fiction.

Satan's Sorrow was my joy

A beautifully eloquent book which sadly demonstrates the decline in the expressiveness of modern language. I was gripped from the first chapter onwards and felt empathy and emotion as to the plight of the main characters.
The devil is wonderfully described and I feel as if I know him all too well. He passes such sublime insights into theological debate that it sets the mind spinning. It is a cleverly described work of fiction which tends to polarise one's opinion towards religion and the general inhumanity of mankind. What struck me was that the description of "jaded youth", of selfish and "sensual egotism" in the late 1800's was equally applicable in the new Millennium. After reading it I found myself less likely to bemoan daily trivial problems and more likely to appreciate the simpler beauty of nature around me.

That the Devil himself could have sorrows of his own is a concept that many poets and writers have expressed,but none of them can surpass Marie Corelli's attempt.The book describes the life of one Geoffery Tempest,a struggling writer who half unknowingly lets the Devil take charge of his affairs.He becomes a millionaire overnight,then publishes his book,gets married to a beautiful lady and still does not find any solace.The book describes the devil's plight in moving detail ,and you really feel sorry for the Fallen Angel ,who loves the Lord much more than petty humans.A must-read for discerning lovers of good writing.

I am somewhat new to the works of Donna Gates. She came highly recommended so I recently ordered this book after spending a few weeks reading on her site. I'm only about 4 chapters into the book and was pleased to find that I had already implemented several of her ideas and suggestions for improving gut health, so I am on the right track, a work in progress, and there is more I can do!
So far the book is excellent and very helpful, I highly recommend it!
I'm sure that I'll have more comments and opinions as I read along.

It's also worth checking out her website, BodyEcology.com, there is a wealth of information available.
In addition, her products Vitality Super Greens, Super Spirulina, and Earth Minerals are of superior quality.

I bought 3 books of this series. You might not need as many. But this is a big change for me and I wanted to have references to
check. This information is specific to older adults, so it may be all you need to get started. You will need to refer back as you progress in the diet. I put sticky notes on the pages I need to refer to. Overall a good guide. But one read is not enough.

Great collection -- but beware

This is a great collection of old stories from 1965. But what I learned only after is that the paperback publishers basically split the Random House hardcover edition (ghost-edited by Robert Arthur) into two paperbacks: Stories Not for the Nervous, and More Stories Not for the Nervous. You need to buy both papers if you want all the stories that were included in the classic hardcover, Stories Not for the Nervous.

The "More" edition contains the famous story "For All the Rude People" by Jack Ritchie and the classic "Sorry Wrong Number" by Lucille Fletcher.

The "More" edition DOES NOT contain the Ray Bradbury, Carter Dickson and Fredric Brown stories, for example.

Just worth mentioning. If you are selling these books, please list them carefully.

STORIES MY MOTHER NEVER TOLD ME

Stories My Mother Never Told Me is another in the series of short story collections Dell released in the sixties and seventies. Again, Alfred Hitchcock was not involved. This collection is primarily comprised of stories with either "shock" endings or fantastical elements.

There are thirteen stories here, by quite an impressive list of authors: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Shirley Jackson, Grace Amundson, Robert Arthur, Andrew Benedict, John Collier, Gerald Kersh, George Hitchcock, George Mandel, Richard Matheson, Jane Rice, Don Stanford, and Richard Wormser.

Unfortunately, not many of these stories are very spectacular. Several stories are interesting but lack punch at the end. Collier's "Witch's Money" I didn't see the point of at all. There are too many cannibal stories (you'd think one per volume would be sufficient). And there's an inferior take on Connell's classic, "The Most Dangerous Game".

On the whole, there's enough to keep fans of this type of thing entertained, but nothing particularly amazing.
