Excellent Textbook

I ordered this textbook for my class. My school bookstore wanted $130.00 for a used one. Buying this book saved me $100.00 - literally!!! The book was used but was in excellent condition. I was sooo happy with this purchase! Best purchase I have ever made on Amazon! This book had no marks and no highlighting. It did have a few page earmarks, but who cares. The cover was in good condition. Couldn't have asked for a better book!

About the Author
For more than fifty years, Don Gossett has been serving the Lord through full–time ministry. Born again at the age of twelve, Don answered his call to the ministry just five years later, beginning by reaching out to his unsaved family members. In March 1948, Don overcame his longtime fear of public speaking and began his ministry in earnest, preaching for two country Baptist churches in Oklahoma.

Blessed with the gift of writing, Don became editor of the Bible College magazine in San Francisco; afterward, he was invited to become editor of an international magazine. Following this, he served as editor of T. L. Osborn's Faith Digest, a magazine that reached over 600,000 homes each month.

Don has penned many works, particularly ones on the power of the spoken word and praise. His writings have been translated into almost twenty languages and have exceeded twenty–five million in worldwide distribution. Additionally, Don has recorded scores of audio series. His daily radio broadcast, launched in 1961, has been released into eighty–nine nations worldwide.

Don raised five children with his first wife, Joyce, who died in 1991. In 1995, Don found lifelong love again and married Debra, an anointed teacher of the Word. They have ministered worldwide and have lived in British Columbia, Canada, and in Blaine, Washington State.

In September 2009, Don and Debra (also an ordained minister) founded a new church in Vancouver, British Columbia, where they continue to serve as pastors. The International Community Church truly is an international body of believers with members from many nations sharing a vision: to bring the saving, healing, and restoring power of Jesus to the community, locally and abroad.

Excellent writer, who makes being bold something we should all aspire towards. God seldom uses people who are afraid, and this is evident throughout the Bible. Earth will miss this great author, but his purpose is complete and it's now our turn.

Conover, author of Rolling Nowhere, posed as an immigrant, crossing the border twice and learning first-hand about "coyotes"those who sneak Mexicans and other Latin Americans across the border, often under murderous conditions. Menaced by hoods, arrested, freed, forced to dodge spotter planes, Conover spent a year, as he puts it, "working, drinking, smoking, driving, sleeping, sweating and shivering with Mexicans." His conclusion: "It is urgent that we know more about these people who ask little more than to wash our dishes, vacuum our cars, and pick our fruit." This well-written, anecdotal account offers an intimate glimpse of the United States from a perspective few citizens are aware of.

YA The title refers to the name given to those people who smuggle illegal aliens into the United States. Conover lived among the people who pay ``coyotes'' enormous sums of money to be brought into this country secretly under condi tions that are full of physical threat. The most touching part of the book is the description of Conover's visit to Ahua catlan, the province from which many of the men he has met come. Here he wit nesses what has happened to the families left behind. While the money the men have earned has resulted in some im provement, there is still enormous pov erty in their lives, and their home life is drifting toward disintegration. There is humor, too, including a hilarious episode in which several men pool enough mon ey together to fly from Mexico to Los Angeles but must find the appropriate clothing and behaviors to avoid arousing suspicions by ``La Migra.'' Conover has done a good job of capturing the difficult lives of these men who want only to earn a decent wage to support their fami lies. Barbara Weathers, Duchesne Academy, Houston

Conover, author of an earlier book on hobos, studies Mexican illegal aliens by living their life and crossing the border with them. His book is similar to John Davidson's The Long Journey North ( LJ 10/15/79), but Conover takes dangerous personal risks, spends more time with his contacts, covers a larger group of Mexicans, and ranges across Idaho, Arizona, and Florida as he describes how these people migrate within the United States. His experiences in central Mexico effectively capture the immigrant's impact on his own rural community, although one wishes for deeper personal insights into his subjects' motivations. REAL LIFE DRAMA AND ADVENTURE

Having recently read NEWJACK: GUARDING SING SING, I was motivated to look into other Conover works. The impression he left with Newjack was to be reinforced by the flawless COYOTES.
Conover, the authour, goes where no American would dare. He befriends and lives along side Mexican immigrants who cross the border every year to find agricultural jobs. He details several occassions of crossing the border, a series of hardships and dangers. In his tales the reader is given first hand accounts of brutal mexican police, pesky immigration officers, and the ruthless and dangerous coyotes who smuggle illegals over the border and throughout the border territories. For Conover, interviews were not enough, he walked more than a few miles in their shoes.
Not only does Conover do the adrenaline pumping crossings but he lives life on both sides of the border. He spends season in citrus groves in Arizona, California, and Florida. He spends the offseason in a mountainous Mexican ranchero, among what most of us would consider poverty. Through it all he does a moving and mesmorizing job of painting the picture of the migrant worker.
The book is more than investigative non-fiction, it is a flowing story, encompassing a struggle few have accurately documented. The book reads fast, simultaneously entertaing and interesting the reader. This stands as a favorite in any non-fiction collection. Five stars and then some.

Exciting and suspenseful.

Conover travels with various groups of illegal immigrants and immerses himself in their world. His firsthand accounts cover an impressively broad set of immigrant experiences--the small Mexican towns filled with adventure-seeking youth, journeys to the border, negotiations with smugglers, run-ins with police, finding work in the U.S., and adjusting to a new life. Through it all, Conover maintains his point of view as a middle-class American Everyman, making the book accessible to the average Joe. Yet he always keeps his eyes and ears open to the people and events he encounters.
The book makes it apparent that a criminal industry of smugglers, thieves and corrupt cops has sprung up to take advantage of cash-carrying immigrants before they even leave Mexico. Meanwhile, the relatively small Border Patrol is spread too thin to turn back all but a few crossers, who with a little persistence can try their luck the next night.
Though the media tends to portray illegal immigrants as simply the latest generation of noble achievers looking for the American Dream, Conover's work shows how the current wave of immigration from Mexico is different. The new immigrants are often more loyal to their homeland than to their adopted country, travel back and forth with ease, and can find ethnic comfort zones where they can make American dollars but never have to learn American culture. The book describes events that happened in the mid-1980s, but it's more timely than ever as continued high immigration levels keep this issue on the front burner.

This book was both moving & thought provoking as it explains just a few illegal immigration stories. What you realize by the end of the book is that these are more than stories...these are people's lives. Filled with all the feeling and emotion that REAL PEOPLE experience, the reader comes to know that these experiences aren't just another immigration story filled with all its hardships and obstacles. It's about loss, yearning, looking forward to the future, friendships, and the upstanding of people you have no reason to trust. A definite good read.

Very basic book that tries to cover much but is ...

Very basic book that tries to cover much but is mostly a quick run through most models. This book is for the very novice audience who havs no idea what marketing analytics is all about. It tells you about a model, gives you a name (e.g. Regression), followed by a paragraph of explanation and a very basic example. If you have any experience in the marketing field this book is not for you. It is mostly for undergraduate students (definitely not for graduate students). You can use it as a starting point to know what exists out there but don't think this book will take you into any depths into these models and you would not be able to really use these in real work situations.

A MUST have Analytics book!!!!!

This review is for all those first timers who have never experienced the world of analytics,the book starts off with basic concepts and build's you up for complex models.The models are explained in detail with case examples to help the reader get a deeper understanding of the models.Each concept of a chapter is supported by a real world case which helps the reader relate and retain the concepts learned.
I would highly recommend this book.

Great textbook for a Marketing Analytics course

I will approach this review from an academic angle and share my reactions to the book as I progressed from the first chapters towards the end.

The book starts with setting the ground on what Marketing Analytics is as a discipline and dives into different application areas of marketing analytics in the organization. The coverage of the topics in each chapter is self-explanatory with plenty of clearly explained concepts, acronyms and terminology every marketing professional uses and/or comes across every day. From Chapter 3 on, there are advanced concepts around segmentation and modeling which are demonstrated by data and excel based examples, which are very valuable for someone exposed to these techniques for the first time. Reader is guided through excel menus and options while the concept (such as regression, linear optimization etc.) is explained and results of the analysis tied to tangible outcomes. Throughout the book, there are callouts which provide examples (called Marketing Made Measurable) which give mini-cases which ground the concepts covered in each chapter to interesting examples from real life. This practical approach of the book is what makes this a great textbook for a curriculum which has a Marketing Analytics offering at the advanced undergraduate or entry graduate level.

I am giving 4 stars since the book is accomplishing a ton by providing a very wide coverage of all the possible topics which are traditionally embedded within the marketing analytics discipline, but as with any other such project, there is room to improve. Recent advances in big data solutions such as Hadoop and open source analytics software such as R as well as real-time analytics solution stack for marketing may be included in the next editions as they are slowly expanding the analytics scope within marketing.

Overall this is an excellent textbook and I strongly recommend it to anyone thinking about what textbook to use for their course on Marketing Analytics.

Good Textbook - Hilarious Finds

I can't imagine anyone buying this outside the purposes of a classroom so my review is going to be based on that assumption.

For a textbook, it isn't nearly as dry or boring as most. The material is interesting and to the point, there are good examples, and it is presented in a way that is easy to remember. Also, the book throws in some tidbits that will startle you if you actually do your assigned readings. I almost think that they do it so teachers will know if you have read it ;) for example, they literally use the phrase "sexy rhinoceros" at one point and use outrageously silly sexual references. Overall, a good textbook on interpersonal communication.

Hoodwinked... Expected More...

I give this book three stars. I have been eagerly anticipating this book for a couple of months now and when I got it I was sadly disappointed. This book is a collection of reprinted declassified manuals from various WWII era clandestine organizations (U.S. Office of Stratigic Services, British Special Operations Executive). My problem comes from the fact that all these manuals can be had for free on-line in pdf format. The book does retype/edit the material but left a lot of the original illustrations, diagrams, pictures out of this book. I understand why they would have left these out of the book in some cases. Because of the quality in the originals are very bad in these historical photocopies, so they simply left them out of there version of these publications. I recommend finding the on-line versions to supplement the material left out or just get the originals. Examples of the reprinted material are the "OSS Disguise Manual," "The Partisans Handbook," "OSS Simple Sabotage Manual" to name but a few listed in this book. Overall this book is not bad and an ideal historical reference to operational tradecraft.

About the Author
Chris Townsend is an internationally recognized hiking expert who has trekked the world over. His books include "The Backpacker's Handbook", which won the prestigious Outdoor Writers' Guild Award for Excellence in the United Kingdom. His solo treks include a 1,600-mile hike over the entire Candian Rockies, a 1,000-mile walk across the Yukon, and a monumental 3,000-mile hike from Canada to Mexico along the Continental Divide Trail. He lives in Scotland.

Second printing on the way

I wanted anyone interested in this book to know that Phaidon will soon be setting a second print run to press. Due to ongoing demand the 2nd printing will be available by late Spring/early Summer 2010. The high prices currently being sought by third parties will tumble as these books hit the market.
This book is the best of all the titles ever printed that cover her brief life. It offers reproductions of about 25% of her known vintage prints and will have to do until her Estate prints more of her negatives or authorizes a catalogue raisonné, which would cost a small fortune.

Additional news: I knew Francesca quite well during the last 6 months of her short life and saw the film "The Woodmans" a few months back with the expectation that some personal questions might have been answered in the course of the movie. Unfortunately, they weren't. Anyone who would like more specifics on her life should make an effort to see the film but be warned that it's not a simple, pretty picture of a loving family...

Art Criticism - what is it good for?

I, personally, like Francesca Woodman's photographs and they are well represented in this book. It's a lovely, big, heavy, think-paged, glossy, pretty book with a giant gold F and W on the front and back cover (under the paper sleeve). I found the commentary at the back by her father and Betsy Berne to be informative, interesting, and helpful and enjoyed looking over the selection of her journal entries they included. It makes it much easier to read her writing when you know that she self-consciously chose an affected style. Actually, I thought Betsy Bernes' three page letter was better written than most of the book and certainly more believable. But I do have a tendency to raise a questioning eye-brow at a lot of the sorts of things that art critics seem to find so very important, obvious, or interesting. For instance, I've never really been on board with this whole obsession of turning every object or juxtaposition into a metaphor for the camera. It's practically Freudian, the connections are so stretched sometimes. Yes, I actually read the 70 page essay on her work and, to give it credit, it was thorough and pretty well organized with lots of examples in the margins of her contemporaries' work and that of her influences. I did learn a lot about her life and the context in which she grew up and made her art and about how very much she may have intended to say with each piece. But I do say 'may have' quite purposefully. Read the text with a grain of salt and you can get a lot out of this book. And, of course, the pictures make it worth it.

I have over 100 books on photographers and photography, but this one is my most treasured. The images are exquisitely reproduced, and arranged in such a thoughtful manner, and the accompanying text/outline/stories add a human element to the tragic story of such a brilliant and gifted photographer.
