Three groups of analytical methods that have found application in the study of bin-loads and bin/hopper geometry design are presented in detail: the limit state methods, the methods of differential slices, and the methods of plastic limit analysis. All are approximate methods with various degrees of simplification. The limit state methods involve least approximations, thus being regarded as the most accurate. However, the simplicity and flexibility of the less accurate methods of differential slices makes them the primary tool in bin-load analysis in engineering practice. The methods of plastic limit analysis are located somewhere in between the other two methods with respect to approximations involved. This volume will provide a useful reference on the implications of the latest analytical methods in the study of bin-loads, and will help to initiate and guide future research in this area.

Before there was Titanic the movie or Phantom the musical, one of the great spectacles was the panorama. This art form, popular for a relatively brief period in the 19th century, saw large crowds turn out in cities across Europe and North America to view depictions of battles, great land- and cityscapes, and historic events in, most often, circular purpose-built structures. Many factors, including the cost of the paintings themselves as well as the rise of photography and eventually motion pictures, led to the death of the panorama. French writer Comment, in this excellent history of a mostly forgotten art form, traces the history of the panorama, describes audience reactions, and gives biographical sketches of many of the artists as well as a critical assessment of their work (when possible, as most of the panoramas themselves have been lost). A highlight of the book is the inclusion of the gatefold color illustrations of seven panoramas that give only the slightest hint of what the panorama experience must have been like. A fine complement to Stephan Oettermann's somewhat more academic The Panorama (LJ 1/98), this is an accessible introduction for informed lay readers.

I didn't enjoy it

I bought this book for two reasons. First, it had positive reviews:) But also because the table of contents showed a wider number of subjects than the rest of books (e.g. classic control theory but also digital control, Lyapunov stability, optimal control, and some bits of fuzzy, neural, and adaptive control).

The problem is that the book is boring. Nise's Control System Engineering is much more readable.

Regarding the introduction of non-linear, optimal, robust, and adaptive control I think that the best is too go to the specialised sources.

this book is well written and it covers many aspects of control theory. the detail given is more than sufficient for an undergrad student. especially when it comes to doing the problems by hand, this book gives very good detailed worked examples.
books like norman nise give more matlab examples but students are required to do problems by hand in exams and homeworks. this book helps by giving more worked examples where matlab is not used.
