About the Author

David Adams holds the Ian Mactaggart Chair of Property and Urban Studies at the University of Glasgow, where Steve Tiesdell was Senior Lecturer in Public Policy until his death in 2011. They worked together for over a decade, first at the University of Aberdeen and then at Glasgow, sharing a mutual interest in state-market relations in land and property, and applying this to research and teaching on planning, public policy, real estate development, urban design and urban regeneration. Before moving to Aberdeen, Steve worked at the Universities of Nottingham and Sheffield, while David was previously at the Universities of Reading and Manchester. Shaping Places represents the culmination of their mutual endeavour and builds on previous joint publications, including their edited book Urban Design in the Real Estate Development Process (2011).

David and Steve have each researched and published widely in their respective fields. Steve’s previous books include Revitalising Historic Urban Quarters (co-author 1996), Public Places – Urban Spaces: The Dimensions of Urban Design (co-author 2003 and 2010) and The Urban Design Reader (co-editor 2006). David’s previous books include Urban Planning and the Development Process (author 1994), Greenfields, Brownfields and Housing Development (co-author 2002) and Planning, Public Policy and Property Markets (co-editor 2005).

About the Author

After receiving a degree in horticulture from UW Madison, Kim Flottum worked four years in the USDA Honey Bee Research Lab, studying pollination ecology. After that, he spent two years raising acres of fruits and vegetables, where bees played a large role. He brings this experience, plus nearly 20 years of writing and editing articles for beekeepers in the monthly magazine Bee Culture. He is the publisher of books on honey bee pests and diseases, marketing, queen production, beekeeping history, beginning beekeeping, and the classic industry reference, The ABC & XYZ of Bee Culture.

Excellent for a backyard beekeeper instead of a commercial beekeeper

This book has a LOT of information that is very useful to me as a beekeeper with one hive. Most of the books you get are written for someone who will eventually have many hives. This one assumes you won't expand beyond your backyard. It has a lot of updated information about the varroa mite problem as well as the traditional problems. This new edition includes safe pest control techniques, top bar basics, urban beekeeping tips and tricks and 25 rules of modern beekeeping. I checked out the previous edition at the library and found it very helpful --this one is even more so. There are many pictures of various things going on in the hive, as well as harvesting the honey and wax. There are recipes for various creams, butters, and balms made from the wax, as well as tips on harvesting and marketing the honey. The only thing I didn't like was that it had no recipe for sugar water, pollen substitute or anything like that. They merely say you can purchase them. Fortunately, you can find these recipes on the internet.

One of the best books on beekeeping.

An excellent introduction to Beekeeping. I've bought and read 5-10 books on beekeeping, this is the best so far! Covers everything in a well laid out, narrative style. Well organized and illustrated, leaves little out. If you are interested in bees or beekeeping and want a "bible", here it is. Start with this book. Good coverage of the three most popular types of hives, their variants and reasons for each style. Diseases and pests also well covered.

Best beginner honey bee book period

Well written, fun to read, numerous color illustrations.

Even old time beekeepers will learn something in this wide ranging, yet thorough book. Why? Because the author, as editor on one the two most popular beekeeping journals, has used his access to latest information on everything from new ways of keeping bees, to the most update information on bee pests, like varroa and small hive beetle to produce by far and away the best beginner honey bee book ever published.

I loved the '25 Rules of Modern Beekeeping' near the end of the book that neatly and memorably summarized the preceding beautifully illustrated 200 pages.

A beautiful historical fantasy that sweeps us away with great characters

I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Aire by Lena Goldfinch is a historical fantasy that stars a young Italian princess named Anna, who has the power to see the future. This is a power she keeps hidden from everyone because others might not understand. Her hand in marriage is given to a suitor who she doesn't love, and in a burst of rebellion, she flees the dance that would announce this betrothal. As she flees, her boat is caught by mercenaries who mistake her clothmaiden for her. What happens next is a whirlwind of Anna trying to find her missing friend, falling in love for the first time, and learning how to think for herself.

The setting of this novel is beautiful-- we get the sense of the vastness and gorgeousness of Italian royalty. There is plenty of intrigue and plot twists. Anna is a good protagonist, and we also get to see in the head of the male protagonist, Jovanni. The supporting characters are strong, especially Ilan, one of her favorite servants. The last 20% of the novel moves at a quick pace and at that point, is hard to put down.

I did feel that the middle section dragged quite a bit, as we keep getting told that Anna and Jovanni are looking for the missing girl, and a lot of wandering takes place. I also wasn't a big fan of the Italian words that were plugged into the text to remind us she was in Italy-- but that's more a personal preference.

Overall, a beautifully written historical fantasy that introduces us to some great characters.

A Startling Romance with Touches of Magic!

I absolutely loved this book--the sweeping romantic images, the magic, the lyrical prose, and the beautifully imagined characters that you find yourself falling for in the first chapter. Annalisia is a heroine with just the right amount of courage and doubt. Her romance with Jovanni is kept at bay like a long held breath with the perfect satisfaction of coming up for more "aire" I cannot wait for more from this author!

Romantic Adventure with Beautiful Details

I love everything about Aire. The characters are incredibly well thought out (Jovanni is my favorite--but I do seem to have a soft spot for falcons:-)), and the attention to detail is simply amazing. Shifting points of view add many twists and turns, and every thread of information intertwines seamlessly. The setting is beautiful, the voice is fabulous, the pacing is perfect, and it's just... WOW! Aire is a lovely romance safe to recommend for any age.

its boring most of the time

This book was selected for my book club and while well written, it was hard for me to stay engaged. There was no rhyme or reason how the chapters were done and most diary entries did not relate to the previous one. It was just a story of two years of her life (with some flashbacks) and her life wasn't that interesting but I guess that's life, its boring most of the time.

I can't recommend this book highly enough—I've already sent copies to two friends and lent a third my copy to enjoy.

The short vignettes, each offering its own glimpse into a moment, a day, or a memory, were the perfect device to give us a glimpse into the life of the writer. Each segment was satisfying in itself while also coming together in the context of the book as a whole to offer a wonderfully complex portrait, and as soon as I finished, I found myself wanting to start back over at the beginning to savor them all over again. Julavits' diary entries contain multitudes—funny moments and poignant one—and throughout, the authenticity of the voice and the genuine candor with which the author captures the female experience makes this an incredibly engaging read.

A great different kind of read!

I really enjoyed reading all the journal entries. Reading the book in segments leant itself to being easy to pick up and read for short periods of time. The entries are not in chronological order and at first seem disjointed. As the book progresses, even though there is no plot, the essays bring the author's life, personality, and thinking into view. The book let me see a little of how Heidi's mind works and experience the richness of her experiences. I like her very much. At times I was laughing out loud and was sorry when the book ended. I plan to read more of this author's books!

Warm, honest and compelling / a message of hope

I loved the book, its well written easy to read and very informative. The authors honesty about this subject and his experience with it and how its impacted him and those around him is powerful. The book draws you in on many levels, the human drama, the factual reality of what to expect and of course the positive message of hope resonates from the start ! Its a great read well worth your time .
