About the Author
Robbie Burns has been a journalist and writer since he graduated in journalism from Harlow College in 1981. After starting life as a reporter and editor for various local newspapers, from 1988-1992 he was editor of ITV and Channel 4's teletext services. He also wrote ITV's daily teletext soap opera, 'Park Avenue', for five years. He then went on to freelance for various newspapers, including the Independent and the Sun, and also helped set up a financial news service for CNN. In 1997, he became editor for BSkyB's teletext services and set up their shares and finance service. While there he also set up various entertainment phone lines in conjunction with BSkyB, including a Buffy the Vampire Slayer phone line that made him nearly £250,000. He left full-time work in 2001 to trade and run his own businesses, which included a cafe in London that he later sold, doubling his money on the initial purchase. While at BSkyB, Robbie broadcast a diary of his share trades, which became hugely popular. He transferred the diary to his website, www.nakedtrader.co.uk, which became one of the most-read financial websites in the UK. Between 2002 and 2005 he wrote a column for the Sunday Times, 'My DIY Pension', featuring share buys and sells made for his pension fund which he runs himself in a SIPP. He managed to double the money in his pension fund from £40,000 to £80,000 in under three years, as chronicled in these articles. By mid-2011 he had turned it into £250,000. Robbie now writes a weekly column for ADVFN.com. Robbie has made a tax-free gain of well over £1,000,000 from trading shares since 1999, making a profit every year, even during market downturns. His public trades alone - detailed on his website - have made more than £900,000. He is also the author of The Naked Trader's Guide to Spread Betting. He lives in a riverside apartment on the Thames with his wife, Elizabeth, and young son Christopher. Waste of time

This book is a waste of time and money. It contains mostly short-term trading rules hiding under the guise of long-term investment which in the long run will result in either losses or subpar performance to the index. All his examples came from taking risky bets during the 2002-2007 bull market during which any buffoon with a pulse could have made money, then he mysteriously goes silent during the crash with no good examples of his "money-making strategies". It's not to say all his advice is completely useless - it's not, but you can get most of his advice for free on random forums or free investing newsletters with very little effort, and even then it mostly just boils down to combination of common sense and a bit of discipline which may or may not necessarily be good for your portfolio. For example, he has a trading rule to automatically sell any stock that drops 10%, which is quite frankly idiotic (not so much the selling of the stock, but moreso the indiscriminate nature of the rule).

My suggestion is to avoid this author and try something else.

Must-Have

Since I bought this book some months ago, I've read it over and over. It's so easy to understand, and its breadth is so comprehensive; it's a godsend for someone like me who used to be a complete duffer when it came to anything to do with stocks, shares and trading. I'd been following the techniques and advice Robbie gives (on paper at first of course!) for several months before I took part in an online spreadbetting competition last month, and won 300 pounds for second place.

This writer is not out to belittle anyone. He writes with clarity and with understanding. He has a real knack for communicating different ideas. His writing is often very funny. Wonderful ideas about using search to winkle out the real meaning behind company reports!

Short and sweet

The Tata Nano is a car that has taken the world by storm. It has opened new paradigms to create products for emerging markets with a completely different mindset. No doubt the center of gravity of the global economy is slowly but steadily shifting to Asia in the twenty first century. India and China will me the mega markets of the future. But the important point to remember is that despite rapid growth, these markets will continue to have low per capita incomes, compared to the developed world. This means, these countries need products that are ultra low cost with high customer value propositions. These products also need to be ultra energy efficient (low running costs) and leave negligible environmental foot print for sustainable development. The Tata Nano is here as a great case study to demonstrate that this is possible. This little book captures the vision of Ratan Tata to bring a low cost affordable family car for the millions of Indians. Great team work translates this vision into a reality.

Working at a target cost of Rs 1 lac (Approx USD 2300) for an affordable fuel efficient car that meets all safety and environmental standards is no small task. The highly talented and committed team is closely supported by Ratan Tata himself at all stages. Many industry experts thought that the cost target was impossible to achieve. Even if the cost target was met, they thought that the final product would at best be a four wheeled, covered auto rickshaw. Tata Motors proved them wrong.

Gary Hamel in his book "The Future of Management" points out that creativity and passion contribute to over 50 percent of human capability and is hardly tapped by today's organizations. Successful companies know the difference. The making of the Nano is a great example on the power of unleashing full human potential at the workplace.

The book is a good narration of the story from concept to the final rollout, including the unfortunate shifting of the plant from Singur in West Bengal to Sanand in Gujarat.

Several challenges in design and the concept of frugal engineering are discussed. The comfort and safety of the customer were paramount at all stages. What finally rolled out was a near miracle in automobile history.

The book gives due credit to all the key members led by Girish Wagh of the Nano team who slogged against all odds to fulfill their mission.

About the Author
Ana C. Jarvis, a native of Paraguay, was born in Asuncion and attended school in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She received her Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of California, Riverside, in 1973. Dr. Jarvis retired from Chandler-Gilbert Community College after a long and distinguished career. Prior to CGCC, she taught at Mesa Community College; the University of California, Riverside; San Bernardino Valley College; Brigham Young University; and Riverside City College. In addition to authoring numerous Spanish textbooks, she has published several short stories in Spanish. In 1988, she was chosen as "Faculty Member of the Year" at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

Raquel Lebredo was born in Camaguey, Cuba. She attended school in Havana and later enrolled at the University of Havana, where she received a Ph.D. in Education. She was subsequently employed as an elementary school principal, and taught literature and language at a preparatory school in Havana. She moved to the United States after living in Spain for a period of time. Dr. Lebredo was awarded a Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of California, Riverside. Since then, she has taught Spanish at Claremont Graduate School, Crafton Hills College, the University of Redlands, and California Baptist University, and has authored several Spanish textbooks. In 1985, she was chosen as "Faculty Member of the Year" by the student body at California Baptist University, and in 1991 she received a YWCA "Women of Achievement" award.

Francisco Mena-Ayllon, a native of Madrid, Spain, received his Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of California, Riverside, in 1973. He has taught Spanish language and literature courses at the University of California, Riverside; Oberlin College; California State University, Chico; the University of Redlands; and Crafton Hills College. In addition to authoring numerous Spanish textbooks in the United States, he has published a book about Federico Garcia Lorca and several volumes of his own poetry. His poetry has been published in Spain, Latin America, and the United States. His work has also been included in several anthologies of contemporary Spanish poets, and he is listed in Quien es Quien en las Letras Espanolas, 1978 (Who's Who in Spanish Letters), as an important contributor to contemporary Spanish literature. Professor Mena-Ayllon is now retired.
