About the Author
Régis Loisel is widely acknowledged as the first French author to have worked in the fantasy genre in recent decades, his style having become the standard for other European authors working in the genre. He is known best for his work on the best-selling series The Quest of the Time-Bird (La Quete de l’Oiseau du Temps) and his second series Peter Pan. Loisel has also worked with Disney on various animated films such as Mulan and Atlantis.

Beautifully told and drawn.

I have spent today reading Regis Loisel's 330pg HC 'Peter Pan'. It's an adult narrative of the story, without going over the top in absurdity. It spans from Peter's origins in Gloomy London, groomed by paedophiles and raised by an unloving alcoholic mother. A very appealing tinkerbell picks him up and takes him to Neverland, where the story continues to Native Americans, Pan and Hook. Beautiful full colour artwork created over 14 years (I think first published through Heavy Metal). I am loving all the European comics that are now being published into English hardcovers (Manara etc), the artwork is exemplary.

Not your mommy's Peter Pan

I have appreciated Regis Loisel's prequel of James M. Barrie's Peter Pan story for some years. The art is dense and detailed, colors enhance the drama, and the story is largely understandable, though my French, she is not so good. Heavy Metal / Tundra began publishing this story in English in 1992, but then stopped after the first two (of five) albums. Bummer.
Though I have all five French albums, as well as an oversize black and white collection with additional material, I was pleased to see the five albums translated into English and collected in this one book published by Soaring Penguin Ltd (June 13, 2013). I didn't hesitate to order my copy and read the entire story in English.
Be warned: While the cartoon art and bright color, depictions of Neverland island, and the pirate ship are closer to the Disney movie version than the illustrations of F.D. Bedford, Arthur Rackham, Mabel Lucy Attwell or Trina Schart Hyman, (I consider Alan Moore & Melinda Gebbie's sexually explicit graphic novel Lost Girls as exploitive trash and unworthy of serious discussion), the narrative by Loisel is dark dark dark. Peter is preyed on by perverts, abused by his alcoholic mother, so his hatred of all things adult is understandable but fanatical. There is plenty of bloody death caused by Peter, Jack the Ripper, Captain Hook, the crocodile and (spoiler alert) Tinker Bell!

One of the most original takes on Peter Pan, ever. NOT your Mother's or Father's Pan, maybe not even mine, but art and pace and a sense of magic take you to a never -never land we all knew was hiding in the dark. NOT FOR CHILDREN !!!!
