HIGHLY RECOMMEND COMPANION PLANTING -- IT WORKS

CARROTS LOVE TOMATOES: Secrets of Companion Planting book is great.

This was recommended at a workshop on planting and how to best organically avoid pests as well as strengthen the abundance of harvest naturally. So we purchased it. At first it seemed that perhaps it was giving too much credit to what is planted near what else. But, low and behold after following the secrets of companion planting and putting carrots next to tomatoes -- both plants benefited extremely. The most delicious carrots in abundance as well as tomatoes. So planted those marigold as suggested and low and behold once again an abundant harvest and goodness what beautiful flowers. Never knew a flower could help avoid an insect that is detrimental from attacking you plants, but it too worked.

Ironically the host of that workshop a year later asked about how we grew so many and such big carrots and the answer was the book she recommended it was a shock. CARROT LOVE TOMATOES,

So after actually practicing many of these ideas in this book, we can tell you first hand they work.

Not impressed

The title of this book is somewhat misleading. There is not much help or organized content for companion gardening in this book. Whatever useful info there is it is randomly scattered through the book. For example, if you like to know what goes well with tomatoes you have to go to six different pages from the index and hope to glean something.
There is a whole lot of content about the history and use of some vegetables and herbs. Though might interesting info it is not why I bought this book.
In short, the book is nor organized well and any material content is thin. I've also purchased "The Vegetable Gardener's Bible (10th Anniversary Edition)" and found that to be a tremendous help for companion planting because there is rich content that is organized and easy to find. So my recommendation is for you to skip this and buy the Vegetable Gardener's Bible instead.

Not Quite the Miracle I Expected

As an avid gardener for home use, I'm good enough at it to know I'm not as good as I should be. In the last few years I've been making a concerted effort to change my gardens into something more closed loop, sustainable, organic and productive. Not a small feat, I know, and so references of all sorts have been making their way through my hands.

Carrots Love Tomatoes was at the top of my list as it is considered "the" guide to companion planting. Companion planting, for those who don't know, is a way of planting things of different types together or apart based on whether or not they will assist each other, keep a certain pest or disease away, or if they are antipathic towards each other. The concept of interplanting folds nicely into companion planting and is a way of maximizing a limited garden space. So I read this book avidly when it arrived from Amazon.

I won't say that I was disappointed, but it wasn't all that I expected. For the beginner, there are questions that might have been better answered. Such as the advice to keep certain plants away from each other but not how far. Or the advice to plant a certain herb, say borage, near some types of plants for pest control yet not saying what the general range is per plant so one might know how much of a garden to dedicate to it.

It is a cute book in that it has lovely old fashioned snippets and hand drawn images. It is a relatively quick read, but easily referenced later for information you may want to double check.

As others have pointed out, there are some factual problems in the book. In particular, the fungi section can be misleading and I wouldn't suggest that anyone harvest any mushroom unless they are with a group of mushroom hunters and they've got experience.

Overall, despite the ongoing research into what plants really like to be planted next to other plants, this is a valuable little book to have in the truly complete gardener's reference shelf. It introduces concepts that increase the efficiency of home gardens and improves the ability of the home gardener to fill their pantry with the fruits of their labors...with less labor!

As for whether carrots love tomatoes or not, I can say that this year, my first year interplanting carrots and tomatoes, the carrots were smaller.

Awesome in-depth exploration of all aspects!

I was surprised to see the two star review here, but I guess it is all about expectations. This book is the only one I've found that breaks down a VTOL UAV into its core components and drills down to bedrock on each one. This is currently my bible as I try to better understand how to manipulate and optimize my machine for my intended purpose - capturing high quality cinematic footage.

You can buy ARTF kits (almost ready to fly) and with a little soldering, a little programming to get the radio set up properly, and a lot of reading on countless discussion forums (to translate vague instructions not well translated into English) you can take to the air with reasonable competence. That seems to be all the two-star reviewer would like to accomplish at this point and that's fine, but you are going to need this book soon enough! These things fly great until they don't. Your idea of what you'd like to use your quadcopter for will change, and when it does, you can hunt for an overpriced RTF that's "close" to what you need, or you can tweak your craft on your own and get it exactly right. If the latter sounds more appealing to you, this book is for you.

I'm not even building an Elev-8 quadcopter - but the topics and the clear language in this book are universal. It's rare to find someone with this level of passion and knowledge about a technical subject who can also make it this accessible.

If nothing else, this book will expose you to questions you didn't even know to ask. I bought this elsewhere because of a gift card I was given, but I bought the tablet version. I think I will order a print edition here on Amazon as I expect to spend a lot of time in this book.

Excellent Book...but not for beginners.

This book is a comprehensive and in depth look at every system and circuit needed to make a Elev-8 copter. I will admit it is not for people that are not somewhat familiar with engineering or technically inclined. I admit that I have a degree in engineering, but I knew nothing about RC planes and quadcopters. After reading this one book, I am comfortable talking about them with people that have built them and fly them. I will be ordering my Parallax copter next month...it looks like a new design is in the works :)

Excellent Resource

I found Mr. McCarthy's book to be a valuable resource. From a geologist's perspective, it was of great help in bridging the gap between engineering geology and geotechnical engineering. It gave me greater insight into not only field technique, but also into geologic considerations that are of importance in foundation design. The text was both concise and clearly written.

The secret elements that spurred musicians to write songs like "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Dust in the Wind" are often, somewhat surprisingly, less than enigmatic. While writing "Sweet Emotion," Aerosmith bad boys Steven Tyler and Tom Hamilton "got into a big fight" over how to end it; Bob Dylan wrote a 20-page story that he then turned into "Like a Rolling Stone"; George Harrison wrote "Here Comes the Sun" while walking around Eric Clapton's garden on a bright day. These tidbits are among the hundreds of anecdotes told by famous musicians--Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, and Grace Slick among them--about their hit songs and compiled in Classic Rock Stories. If you can hum the song, you can likely find its story in this book, which is quite broad in scope. YA-An engaging read that describes the rock scene of the '60s and '70s. Each story reveals insights about favorite songs and the artists who recorded them. A chatty, conversational tone permeates the book, which is divided into chapters such as "Accidents Will Happen," "A Quick One," and "Love and Lust," and varied typeface breaks the text into manageable parts. Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Stevie Nicks, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Jackson Browne, and Alice Cooper tell how they felt about their songs and what they were trying to say. Morse writes with unflinching honesty: "In the sixties and seventies a rock band whose members weren't doing drugs was an exception." A chapter titled "Jurassic Park" gives updates on the rockers. A great choice for reluctant or musically inclined readers.

A fun quick read...

...for anyone who likes music. The quotes contained herein are compiled from many different sources, mostly biographies and magazine articles, but I've never seen them all compiled in one place before. Nifty! This book is best read in short bursts, like while on the bus or waiting for the dentist or something. The inexplicable addition of a "Top 25 Classic Rock Album" list in the rear of the book makes for an entertaining read, as all top-XX lists are, though it is inexplicably skewed toward limp boring prog rock. And not one punk album in the top 25? C'mon! There is also a "Jurassic Park" section which is your basic "Where Are They Now" thing, although it already reads a bit dated (AC/DC's latest release is Ballbreaker, George Harrison is still alive...)

Writen in One Afternoon

Stories? I don't think so. The "story" behind each song is simply a quote or two. The author didn't want to be burdened with the task of actually writing anything. And the quotes are frequently brief. The "story" behind Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way," for instance, is all of four lines. This is book is mostly air. And as for "Classic" Rock, I humbly submit that songs like "Substitute," "That Smell," "Treat Me Right" by Pat Benetar have not exactly been labeled "classic" by anyone but Morse.
I think what happened here is that Morse spend an afternoon on Nexus running searches for a bunch of songs and came up with a miscellaneous series of quotes from backdated issues of Rolling Stone. I feel ripped off.

Someone had to do it.
Tim Morse collects the stories (most of them between one and four paragraphs) behind the music. There are some careless typos, and the dates of those who relate the comments are missing, though much of the info is illuminating. Some of the more familiar stories should probably have been updated or removed outright (Is there anyone who DOESN'T know the origins of "Hey Jude" by now? If there is such a person, he/she wouldn't be reading this book, anyway).
Music researchers will like this book because it's a great reference volume. Now if we can only get Morse to pen a companion piece that includes more black artists--"Classic R&B and Soul Stories," perhaps?

Langer (Holocaust Testimonies, Yale Univ. Pr., 1991) has edited a collection of personal diaries, fiction, drama, poetry, historical writing, painting, and essays about the Holocaust. In the introductions to the sections and the individual authors, he explains the historic, political, and moral framework of the destruction of European Jewry. The ghettos, transports, camps, escapes, and killings are all described. Jankiel Wiernik's depiction of Treblinka is profoundly disturbing, as are the diaries of the Warsaw, Lodz, and Kovno ghettos. Aharon Appelfeld's memorable short novel Tzili, a story about a child's wandering, is the most poignant example of fiction, while Joshua Sobel's play Ghetto and the poetry of Dan Pagis, Paul Celan, Nelly Sachs, and Jacob Glatstein show various attempts to encompass the catastrophe. Among the nonfiction pieces are excerpts from the ghetto diaries of Abraham Lewin (Warsaw) and Avraham Tory (Kovno), an essay from Primo Levi's The Drowned and the Saved, and an essay from Elie Wiesel's Legends of Our Time. There is fiction from Ida Fink (two stories from A Scrap of Time), Aharon Appelfeld (his short novel Tzili), Arnost Lustig (a story from Street of Lost Brothers), Tadeusz Borowski (a story from This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen), and Sara Nomberg-Przytyk (two stories from Auschwitz: True Tales from a Grotesque Land). There's one playwright represented, Joshua Sobol, whose Ghetto is presented in full.
