I want this book in my pants. (Figuratively, don't freak out.)

I picked up Let it Snow, expecting to read it leisurely as the holidays approached. I imagined reading a few pages here and there throughout the month of November, perhaps finishing it over Christmas break, just in time to break out those reindeer socks with the holes I've been wearing since I was ten and refuse to throw away. Instead, I found myself sucked into a charming, engaging web of a story, only to emerge 14 hours later wanting more.

As a fan of all of the author's independent works, I was pleased to find that each author's voice remained just as unique and bold as in their other works, yet all three worked together seamlessly to tell a larger story. The vividness of the characters is such that they stick with you long after you put the book down. (Okay, I say "long after" but seeing as I finished it about 4 hours ago, I really just mean "stick with you for at least four hours and probably longer" after finishing the book. The point is that you'll find no one-dimensional characters here.) I feel sort of scarily like I grew up alongside Tobin, Addie and Stuart, or have been best friends with Jubilee ever since we both missed the bus on the first day of middle school.

The story is simple, but also marvelously complex, tackling such important existential questions as "What course of action should one take when fourteen cheerleaders are locked in a Waffle House in a small town in Virginia during the worst snow storm in fifty years?" Yes, people fall in love- there is romance and heartbreak and lots of dumping and break ups (or at least a couple); but I promise Let it Snow is not one of those Made-for-TV movies that air way too many times on the Hallmark channel during the month of December in which someone learns to believe in the Christmas spirit and Santa Claus brings everyone presents at the end.

No, Let it Snow doesn't tie a nice little red bow on its romance. The character's relationships feel raw, real and honest. They warm your heart and sort of make you want to be in love. (So much so that I had to actually remind myself that, oh yeah, I was already in love.) Don't worry. If you don't have your own love story to tell this Christmas, after finishing this book, you'll probably want to start taking it out for coffee and to your mother's Christmas Eve smorgasbord. Maybe the two of you will even frolic in the snow? Okay, so I don't actually recommend that, since it's a paperback and ice is usually wet and "wet" and "paperback" is usually a bad combination.

My point is, that you should read this book. You should read this no matter how old you are, or where you live, or what time of year it is or whether or not you like Christmas. You should read this if you want to be entertained, moved, made to think.

Do something nice for yourself this Christmas (Or Halloween, even) and read Let it Snow.

John Green is one of my favorite writers! (This is why I originally bought the book.) I didn't realize what I was in for and that resulted in a most pleasant surprise! There are three completely separate stories written by three completely different authors - they have different voices and different styles and they make it work tremendously. The stories tie in together so well that you wish they would collaborate again and again. I recommend this book to anyone asking for a book recommendation. Would give it 20 stars if I could.

This revised and expanded second edition presents a thorough development of the modern theory of stochastic approximation or recursive stochastic algorithms for both constrained and unconstrained problems. There is a complete development of both probability one and weak convergence methods for very general noise processes. The proofs of convergence use the ODE method, the most powerful to date. The assumptions and proof methods are designed to cover the needs of recent applications. The development proceeds from simple to complex problems, allowing the underlying ideas to be more easily understood. Rate of convergence, iterate averaging, high-dimensional problems, stability-ODE methods, two time scale, asynchronous and decentralized algorithms, state-dependent noise, stability methods for correlated noise, perturbed test function methods, and large deviations methods are covered. Many motivating examples from learning theory, ergodic cost problems for discrete event systems, wireless communications, adaptive control, signal processing, and elsewhere illustrate the applications of the theory.

Another outstanding novel out of Africa

You can read a dozen nonfiction books about Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe’s kleptocracy and fail to get a more vivid sense of what life is really like there than from this recent novel by Tendai Huchu. In one short work of fiction, Huchu conjures up the sad reality of day-to-day existence in that beleaguered country: the 90 percent unemployment, the ubiquitous corruption, the hyperinflation, the ever-present shortages, the barely functional electricity service, the vicious eviction of white Africans from their farms and businesses, the rabid homophobia. The people of resource-rich Zimbabwe are among the world’s most poverty-stricken, and average life expectancy in their country is thirty-seven, but what does that really mean for the way they live their lives, day after day? The Hairdresser of Harare opens up a window on that steadily unfolding tragedy.

Here is Huchu summing up this reality: “I felt an atmosphere of friendliness, violence, innovation, poverty, joy, but the only thing that hung over everything else was despair; an air of hopelessness as if everyone was in a pit that they could not climb out of.”

Set in the capital city, Harare, and revolving around the hairdressers who eke out a living from a beauty salon, The Hairdresser is the first-person account of a talented beautician named Sisi Vimbai. As a teenager, Vimbai was impregnated by her Sugar Daddy, a wealthy businessman who quickly grew distant soon after she gave birth to a daughter. Now nearly twenty-six, with a ten-year-old to support, Vimbai is on the verge of desperation when a new threat arises: a handsome young man of twenty-two named Dumi has displaced her as the salon’s most sought-after hairdresser. The novel spins out the tale of Vimbai and Dumi’s growing relationship.

Since writing The Hairdresser of Harare, which appeared in 2010, Huchu has published a second novel, The Maestro, the Magistrate, and the Mathematician. A native of Zimbabwe, he now lives in Scotland and is employed as a podiatrist.

In The 'Hairdresser of Harare', there were many twists and turns throughout the book. I would say that this book would be best for people from the ages 16 and above. The book uses some foul and mature language, as you get deeper into the story. The story talks about the life of a boy who was abandoned by his family because of a sexist "issue". The book also refers to situations that actually happen in real life such as families and friends competing for money and business. This book also talks about politics in the society today such as gays not being accepted, black businesses trying to make a living, and unemployment. The tone of this book is threatening yet optimistic, so the ease of the reading of this book is pretty understanding and is easy to process. I think that this book was very interesting and age appropriate considering the fact that many issues that go on in the world today, was spoken about throughout the book. 'The Hairdresser of Harare' had discussed issues that are relevant today. I could relate to many of the problems that was going on throughout the book and understand how hard some of the issues were to overcome.

Fine writing --fiction, but really true!

A wonderful description of Zimbabwe as it is today -- it's peoples, manners, and its pervasive corruption as told through the lives of a hairdresser and his fellow workers, family and neighbors. Although the author currently lives abroad, I certainly can understand why he left his homeland. Having known an elderly lady who was forced to leave Zimbabwe, her home for 60 years after Rhodesia became independent, this book, although fiction, seemed as if she had written it.

For those interested in what it's like to live in Zimbabwe, I highly recommend Peter Godwin's books: Mukiwa, When a Crocodile Eats the Sun and The Fear. Also, Christina Lamb's House of Stone is another fine book. .

An excellent car worth an excellent book.

This is certainly not one of those one model type of books that is based mainly on material from the standard press kits. On the contrary: written by John McCormick, a notable automotive journalist (CAR, Auto Week, Ward's Auto World), this book tells the complete story about the development of the Evoq prototype from 1999 into the production XLR as introduced in 2003. The XLR, already shown to the press at a preview at Pebble Beach 2000, was the first of the `Art and Science' style vehicles for Cadillac and presented a major `break through' for this American marque. Stylish, luxurious and sophisticated with lots of technical wizardry it received an enthusiastic reception by most of the American as well as the European press. Such a car, meant to revive the Cadillac brand, is certainly worth a book, and it's a good one. It is well written with excellent detail and beautiful photographs, on 128 pages of high-quality paper, including short interviews with the major players in the design, development and production stages of the XLR and these dedicated people are honest and open enough to not hide the problems and the issues they were facing during this challenging process. But they managed to meet those challenges and introduce a real beautiful car giving Cadillac a totally new design vocabulary which can carry them through for the next 10 years or more.

Chapters are well spread over Driving (a test drive by Andrew Frankel), Renaissance (the new Brand philosophy), Design (from Evoq to XLR), Engineering (testing at the Nürburgring), Interior (Bulgari and Eucalyptus wood) and Marketing and each of them give lots of detail. I really enjoyed every page of it. It is a valuable addition to anyone's library who is interested in American cars but for Cadillac enthusiasts it's a must! A most welcome tribute to a daring Cadillac design statement.

About the Author
Adjunct professor at Coastal Carolina University. He earned his Ph.D. and an MBA from The University of Toledo and a Bachelor of Science in Business from Bowling Green State University. Dr. Lind is the co-author with the late Robert D. Mason and William G. Marchal of Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics and Basic Statistics for Business and Economics published by Irwin/McGraw-Hill and Statistics: An Introduction published by Duxbury. In addition he has written Study Guides to be used with these texts.

Professor in the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration at Coastal Carolina University. He earned his Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Minnesota, a M.B.A. from Oklahoma State University, a M.S. in Forest Biometrics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and a B.S. in Forestry from the University of Illinois. Dr. Wathen's research interests include applied statistics, teaching methods, and manufacturing and service process design. He has published articles in the International Journal of Operations and Production Management, National Productivity Review, International Journal of Service Industry Management, and the Journal of Workplace Learning: Employee Counseling Today

Professor of Information Systems and Operations Management at The University of Toledo College of Business Administration. He received his B.S. degree in Mathematics from The University of Dayton, an M.A. in Mathematics from The Catholic University of America, and his D. Sc. in Operations Research from The George Washington University. Dr. Marchal has held visiting appointments at The University of Michigan and George Mason University. He has also worked at the Executive Office of the District of Columbia government, the George Washington University Institute for Management Science, and the U.S. Army Chemical Research & Development Center.

Well written stat book

I had to get this book for a graduate level class. This is a well written book. I am coming to the conclusion that a text book needs to be in color to emphasize content or examples. This is very helpful in this book which is math laden. You will only need to know basic algebra (if that) for this material. Some higher math may help you. There are a lot of examples that show how to use the formulas. Much of which is "plug & chug" to get an answer. The concepts are well explained and there are good real-world examples. There are plenty of solutions in the back of the book. The examples also include graphs to show how the data sets are presented. There are plenty of reference tables for t, f, z and chi values. The CD that came with mine has a stat analysis add-on for Excel. It was called Megastat. I liked it better than the Excel data analysis tool. The CD had a lot of data sets to play with as well. If you can put information into a spreadsheet, you can use this book to help build an understanding of the analysis output. This is a good foundation book for statistical analysis.

Very happy with the book, purchased used, and it arrived in Very Good condition, as described....

Packaging was the "bare" minimum, but it survived the journey.

I guess thats what really counts...

Now I just have to pass the damn class...

Why my original statistics grade of A is not good enough for the nursing program is beyond me...

Wait, I kinda know... After twenty years, I don't remember crap from the stats class I took in the early 90s...

A Good Book, BUT...

A good book for anyone having a desire to learn about candlestick patterns, but I feel the author misses the point. Too many wordy statistics and not enough visuals. Candlestick patterns visually show investor sentiment. This sentiment is especially important when prices approach critical points of support and resistance. Showing more charts on how these patterns react at these critical junctures under various conditions would have been more helpful.

Candlestick patterns IMPLY a change of trend, they DO NOT guarantee it. They are just another indicator reflecting the bullish or bearish implications they represent. A trader must take into account where within the OVERALL TECHNICAL PICTURE the pattern appears and the health of the market. By blending candlestick patterns with Western technical analysis you are getting the best of both worlds.

Strong trends do not turn on a dime. They may require several candlestick signals before changing trend direction. By combining the current investor sentiment and potential behavior candlesticks imply you will, in most cases, be given an early VISUAL warning that all may or may not be right with the current trend.

Candlesticks should not be viewed in isolation. For example, a shooting star, a bearish pattern, appearing at the top of a long uptrend, and at a prior resistance area, strongly implies that a change of trend may be at hand. That same bearish pattern forming as a stock gaps out of a basing or consolidation area on high volume now implys a potentially bullish situation.

I believe those wanting to take full advantage of candlestick patterns would be better served by reading the books of Steve Nison or Stephen W. Bigelow. Both authors offer PRACTICAL TRADING ADVICE illustrated with many charts showing the strengths and pitfalls of these patterns.

An excellent guide

A statistically thorough analysis of candlestick charts. Who would have thought that a good number of formations described in Japanese literature as reversal patterns actually have the opposite effect, while many others have outcomes which are close to random? There are also a few formations with success rates of over 80%. Thomas does an excellent job here of sorting the chaff from the wheat. Excellent research with some surprising findings.

debunking the myth

Taruskin's 2 volume set into Stravinsky's "Russian" period is still the MOST comprehensive investigation for those wanting a more discernible picture of the gestation of works from that period, including the Firebird, Petrushka, the Rite and Les Noces. For example Taruskin compares wedding laments used by Russian brides with those found in the opening of Les Noces. This link becomes significant when one is trying to resolve how much Stravinsky knew about his Russian heritage during the composition of these works. In his conversation books with Robert Craft, several inconsistencies emerge as to the influence of Russian music on Stravinsky's own music. For an interesting read, check out Taruskin's article, "Stravinsky and the traditions: Why the memory hole?" in Opus Magazine 1987. Getting back to the books, of particular significance is a "thematic" catalog of folk materials in which Taruskin attempts to reconstruct the origins of Stravinsky's Russian masterpieces.
I did not give the book 5 stars because I reserve that for the rarest of rarities which are reserved for books/movies/cds which provoke thought in the most unexpected of ways and are unlike anything else like the movie "Being John Malkovich". Another insightful and recent book on early Stravinsky (purely biographical) is Stephen Walsh's "Stravinsky : A Creative Spring : Russia and France, 1882-1934".

This is an extraordinary book which will re-define Stravinsky scholarship. It is by far the best book published on Stravinsky, with perhaps one exception (The Apollonian Clockwork by Andriessen and Schoenberger). Taruskin's scholarship is of the highest quality, his knowledge of Russian music awe-inspiring, and the revelations he uncovers simply by being a Russian-speaker investigating the sources first-hand make this book a watershed in the way we think about Stravinsky. This book only takes the story to 1923 - I can only hope Mr Taruskin is working on the next volume as I write.

On shaky ground

"The Rite of Spring" is a work of a Russian composer on a Russian sujet. But that a serious musicologist tries to tell me that, due to a few vague allusions to traditional folk tunes, it is a pure product of the Russian musical tradition. Please!

No doubt, it is work of genius, a great dark musical vision, but, conceding that in its spirit it is a "authentic" Russian composition, in its composing strategies it owes Debussy and Ravel much more than any Russian composer.

Frankly, I don't understand why Taruskin tries so hard to hide this vital influence on Stravinsky in this book. Though Stravinsky emancipated from these influences in later years, the impact on his early ballet music was tremendous. And Stravinsky was the last one to deny it.

Surely it is worth to discuss the influences in detail, since there are a lot of interferences. Debussy and Ravel themselves were strongly influenced by Russian composers like Mussorgsky and Borodin.

But to blind this part out of the composer biography is just not possible if you want to give a comprehensive picture. The plenty musical examples that Taruskin offers documenting the sources of Stravinsky's compositions are too selective in this respect. It might though be admitted that the impressionistic influences are harder to describe since they refer less to thematic references but much more to matters of technique. There would have been a great opportunity in these extensive volumes to look at all this in detail. Instead of this Taruskin simplifies things or makes awkward derivations. The bitonal Petrouschka chord-combination c major/f-sharp major for example happens to be already accidentally in Wagners "Siegfried" and happens even literally in the cadenza-like part of Ravel's "Jeux d'eau" where Stravinky most likely took his inspiration from. It's just strange and exerted to derive it from Rimsky's system of "octatonic" chord-combinations. Apropos "octatonic", even to claim this system, that Rimsky theoretically fixated for his teaching, as a Russian specific is strange enough, since it is well known that those harmonic influences came to Russian music through Berlioz, Liszt and especially Wagner.

Despite this serious objections, Taruskin deserves a lot of praise for his great research. I never read such a brilliant report about the history of Russian music between Glinka and Stravinsky and the circle around Diaghilev with all its paradoxes.

An enormously interesting book despite the fact that its main thesis, i.e. that Stravinsky is rooted mainly in the Russian tradition, stays on very shaky ground.
